Colombia has experienced decades of civil conflict between the government and various guerrilla groups, paramilitaries, and criminal organizations. A 2016 peace deal with the largest guerrilla group was a major success, although progress stalled for years. Following the election of Gustavo Petro in the 2022 Presidential Election, recent developments have led to optimism that peace may be within reach, as the new administration prioritizes a strategy of “total peace” and dialogue with all armed groups.
